Brushed DC Motor Overview

Brushed DC motors use brushes for commutation. The armature, or rotor, has windings that are terminated to a commutator. Brushes make or break contacts and provide power to the armature.

The stator may have two or more permanent magnets; opposing stator magnet polarities and energized windings attract each other, causing the rotor to rotate. When the rotor comes to an aligned position with the stator, the brushes move across the commutator and energize the next winding.

Brushed DC motors require maintenance and have linear torque/current curves. These motors are easy to control, as speed and torque are proportional to current and voltage.

Microcontrollers

Any MCU family with four pulse-width modulator (PWM) signals can be used to drive the H-bridge DC/DC converter connected to a brushed DC motor. Depending on the sophistication of the control algorithm, feedback control is possible using hall sensors or encoders.

Both C2000™ and Stellaris™ MCUs have QEI inputs to accept encoder inputs. The C2000 MCU family is preferred if high performance and real-time operation are required. Mid-end system requirements can be met with either C2000 or Stellaris MCUs.

Given its ultra-low-power operation capabilities in active and sleep modes, TI's MSP430 can be an ideal choice to control low-end, battery-operated brushed DC motor systems.

Isolation

TI digital isolators have logic input and output buffers separated by TI's silicon dioxide (SiO2) isolation barrier, providing 4 kV of isolation.

Used in conjunction with isolated power supplies, these devices block high voltages, isolate grounds, and prevent noise currents from entering the local ground and interfering with or damaging sensitive circuitry.

Interface/Connectivity

Traditional analog RS-232/RS-485 interfaces remain popular choices for motor-control applications. Looking forward, designers are integrating mainstream interfaces such as Ethernet, USB and CAN into their products.

TI is committed to providing solutions for both traditional and emerging industrial interfaces. For example, TI recently introduced the ISO1050, the world's first isolated CAN transceiver.

Power Management

Texas Instruments offers power management IC solutions, ranging from standard ICs to high-performance, plug-in, power-brick, digital-power MOSFETs and integrated power modules.

From AC/DC and DC/DC power supplies, linear regulators and non-isolated switching DC/DC regulators to PMICs and power and display solutions, Texas Instruments power management IC solutions can help you complete your project.
